Prognosticators and the so-called experts had the San Diego Chargers atop the list of AFC contenders before this year’s NFL season.
Things changed in a heartbeat.
At the start of December, the Chargers’ chances of even making the playoffs appeared in the slim to none category.
My, what a difference three weeks can make.
The Chargers, who trailed the Broncos by three games in the AFC West race, can win the division title and earn a playoff berth tonight with a victory over the Broncos.
“For us it’s been a year we hadn’t planned for,” fourth-year Chargers linebacker Marques Harris said.
Then again, “It’s all about playing best in December and January,” the former Southern Utah University football standout said.
With four games remaining in the regular season, the Chargers were 4-8.
“We stuck together when it was tough,” Harris said. “(It’s because of) the type of guys we have in the locker room.”
A backup at both outside linebacker positions, Harris got the call during the second week of the regular season, after starting right outside linebacker Shawne Merriman underwent surgery to repair torn posterior and anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee.
“It was big for us at first,” Harris said of the loss of Merriman for the season.
Then again, injuries are a part of NFL life.
“We’re just kind of used to it,” he said of dealing with players missing in the lineup. “Everyone knows it’s part of the business.
“Whenever you get the opportunity, you’ve got to perform,” Harris said. “When you get the chance, you’ve got to take advantage of it — not just get out there, but make plays.”
With 22 tackles, 18 solo, along with 2.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception, Harris had made his share of them.
He started three games during the season but has garnered much playing time even in a backup role.
“I’m definitely happy with my play this year,” Harris said..
At times, Harris has played on all four special teams this season. Special teams were Harris’ forte during his first three seasons.
That bodes well for the offseason, when Harris becomes an unrestricted free agent.
He’d like to remain with the Chargers’ organization but is prepared to move on if San Diego opts not to extend his contract.
For now, he and his teammates are focusing on trying to overtake the Broncos and win the division title tonight.
“Luckily we won enough games to be in position for this game,” Harris said.
Should they win, their 8-8 record will be a distant memory.
“It doesn’t matter how well you’ve done once you’re in the playoffs,” he said.
